Brass does, patina. If you use this lighter, it will continue to patina. Some of the patina that is already on the brass will rub off and change. That's the beauty of it.
Suppose you don't want it to change its look after you receive it. I would suggest not using it and coating it with wax regularly to seal out oxygen and liquids, and that's still not a guarantee that it won't change over time. But in my opinion, the more you use it, the better it will look.
